Mercedes‑Benz Sprinter
4×4 Expedition Habitat
A composite habitation box, engineered in Queensland and bonded to a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4x4 cab-chassis — the platform that lets you keep a genuinely drivable vehicle without giving up serious off-grid capability.
The Platform
The expedition vehicle you can still park at the shops
Not everyone wants to be climbing in and out of a truck. The Sprinter's appeal is that it doesn't ask you to give up daily drivability to get real off-grid capability — its torque-on-demand 4x4 system, 190mm ground clearance and 350mm fording depth handle genuine remote-area travel, while the footprint and handling stay closer to a large van than a heavy commercial truck.
What doesn't change is the habitat box itself. Every chassis we build for — Sprinter, Fuso Canter, Isuzu NPS, Unimog — carries the exact same 4,600mm × 2,260mm × 2,100mm habitation box, with the same permanent bed, the same U-shaped lounge, the same storage layout. One design, engineered once and proven repeatedly, rather than a different interior reinvented for every chassis. Only the wall specification and glazing change between our Outback Overlander and Global Overlander tiers — the size and furniture stay identical.
That makes it the platform we most often build for couples and solo travellers: people who want to head down a fire trail on the weekend and still be comfortable navigating a city car park or a tight European village street the following month. The lighter GVM range also means some configurations stay within a standard car licence — worth checking with your state's licensing rules before you commit to a build.
We build the Sprinter in both our specifications, so the choice comes down to how far you're actually planning to travel, not a limitation of the chassis itself.
The Build
The same workshop, the same standard, every time
Whichever chassis it's headed for, every habitat box goes through the same hands in our Queensland workshop.

One Design, Proven Repeatedly
We designed the box once. We don't redesign it per chassis.
The habitat box on a Sprinter is the same box you'd get on a Fuso Canter, an Isuzu NPS or a Unimog — same 4,600 × 2,260 × 2,100mm footprint, same bed, same U-shaped lounge, same cabinetry layout. That's not a limitation, it's the point: three decades spent designing, building and repairing habitation boxes went into getting that one layout right, and every build since has been about refining that same design rather than starting over each time.
What changes between chassis isn't the living space — it's the wall specification and glazing. Our Outback Overlander build carries a 42mm composite shell for serious Australian remote-area travel; the Global Overlander upgrades that to a 65mm shell with full thermal-bridge isolation and expedition-grade windows and doors for genuine multi-continent capability. Choose the platform that suits how you'll drive it, choose the wall spec that suits how far you'll actually go — the home you live in stays exactly the same either way.
"I didn't want to reinvent the interior every time someone brought me a different truck. I wanted to get it right once, and then just build it properly, every time."
Why We Build It This Way
Consistency is the standard, not the exception
A repeatable design isn't a shortcut — it's what three decades of getting it wrong on other people's builds teaches you to value.
Andrew has spent over 30 years in the RV and caravan trade, including years repairing composite European caravans and motorhomes where every workshop seemed to reinvent the interior layout from scratch for each new build — and every reinvention was a fresh opportunity for something to be done differently, and eventually, wrongly.
Standardising the habitat box removed that risk entirely. The bonded-and-dowelled cabinetry, the marine-grade electrical practice, the plumbing routing — all of it has been tested, refined and proven across every build we've shipped, because it's the same design each time, not a new one. A Sprinter owner gets exactly the same scrutiny as a Unimog owner. The only thing that changes is the wall.
Ready When You Are
Bring us your Sprinter. We'll build the part that makes it home.
Outback Overlander builds start from $100,000 AUD, Global Overlander from $145,000 AUD, both complete and ready for vehicle integration.
