Mercedes‑Benz Unimog
4×4 Expedition Habitat
A composite habitation box, engineered in Queensland and bonded to a Mercedes-Benz Unimog U4000/U5000 chassis — available in both our Outback Overlander and Global Overlander specifications, depending on how far the plan actually goes.
The Platform
Why the Unimog is as serious as it gets
The Unimog isn't a converted delivery van or a light 4x4 truck stretched past its comfort zone — it's a purpose-built implement carrier with portal axles, permanent all-wheel drive, and low-range gearing engineered for genuine 45-degree gradients and deep wading. The U4000 and U5000 range from a 10-tonne to a 14-tonne GVM, powered by Mercedes-Benz's own turbo-intercooled OM904LA and OM924LA diesel engines, putting out up to 160kW and 810Nm.
That's the kind of platform margin that lets a habitat box stop being a compromise. We build the Unimog in both our specifications: the standard Outback Overlander for serious Australian remote-area travel, and the Global Overlander — with its 65mm PET composite shell and full thermal-bridge isolation — for clients whose plan genuinely spans continents and climates.
Either way, it's the truck we point clients toward when the plan involves more than one country, more than one climate, and more than a few years on the road.

Why We Build It This Way
A truck built for anywhere deserves a box built the same way
A Unimog is bought by people who take their travel seriously — which means the habitat box has to match that ambition, whichever specification they choose. For Australian-only remote-area work, the Outback Overlander's 42mm shell already handles corrugations and heat that would trouble a lesser build. For a genuinely global brief, the Global Overlander's 65mm shell and thermal-bridge isolation are built for a trip that might see a Mongolian winter and an African wet season in the same year.
That standard comes from the same place all our builds do: three decades in the RV and caravan trade, including years spent repairing composite European motorhomes and caravans for brands like Hymer and Dethleffs. We know exactly where a lesser build gives up first, and we build every Unimog box specifically to not be that truck.
"We didn't want to build a caravan that happens to be off-road. We wanted to build the thing that replaces needing one."
Ready When You Are
Bring us your Unimog. We'll build the part that makes it home.
Outback Overlander builds start from $100,000 AUD, Global Overlander from $145,000 AUD, both complete and ready for vehicle integration.
